One of the “hottest” topics of research and investigation today must be that of the microbiome. With over 48 000 articles on PubMed containing the term “microbiome” published during the last 5 years the concept of microbiota or microbial communities found in a certain area in the human body continue to fascinate. Current estimates suggest that the human body contains thousands of strains and species of microbes, which contribute substantially more genetic material than the human host.
