Worldwide, 760 000 children under 5 years die from diarrhoea every year, making this a global health problem. ^1,2 In low and lower-middle income countries, diarrhoea causes more than 90 % of deaths in the under-five years. ³ According to the World Bank collection of development indicators, 51,4 % of children under five in South Africa in 2016 received treatment for diarrhoea (oral rehydration solution). ⁴
